ANKARA, Turkey (CNN) -- At least six people, including three police officers, were killed in a shootout near the U.S. consulate in Istanbul on Wednesday, CNN Turk reported.

There was no immediate official confirmation of the casualties.
The gunmen pulled up in a white car Wednesday morning and opened fire at a police security checkpoint outside the consulate, said CNN Turk's Ahu Ozurt.
Police fired back.
People in the heavily fortified building were not hurt. Some were awaiting to obtain visas.
At least three bodies remained on the ground as ambulances pulled up and police cordoned off the area with yellow tape.
