Statement from American Religious Leaders in Response to Mass Distribution of 'Obsession'

advertisement

We, the undersigned religious leaders, representing a wide spectrum of theological beliefs and political persuasions, have come together in moral consensus to voice our deep concern over the recent distribution of a deeply divisive and anger-provoking DVD called "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West" to residents across the United States.

The singular impact of this DVD is not to fight our common threat of terrorism, but to mischaracterize Islam in a way that de‐humanizes Muslims.

Unfortunately, 28 million copies of the DVD were distributed in 12 electoral "swing states" by 70 newspapers as a paid advertisement. This is a testament to how widely acceptable anti‐Muslim prejudice has become in our country. If these same publications had distributed a film portraying the Ku Klux Klan's views as common to all Christians, the outrage would have been immediate and overwhelming.

We do not pretend to know the goals of those who distributed this DVD. We do know, however, that the distribution and content of this DVD is absolutely inconsistent with what it means to be fair-minded Americans. Invoking fear and hatred in American voters is not the way to address the real problems of extremism and terrorism that our nation faces.

"Obsession" serves as a divisive political ploy that undermines the integrity of American religious pluralism. Indeed, it is the duty of every American to stand against those who would divide our common and cherished beliefs by inciting fear and furthering ignorant stereotypes.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Good article Dennis,

Interesting, there are of course the Muslim leaders. But there are Jewish leaders, wow,  Mormon leaders, Methodist leaders,Prespyterian leaders, Catholic leaders, evangelical leaders, and Interfaith leaders etc...(sorry if I got some of the spelling wrong)

BUT, I noticed there WERE NOT any Baptist leaders....I wonder why. hmmmmm
I noticed that because I was raised Baptist. I left. But, I remember the sermons. So this isn't too much of a surprise.

I still think the DVD is divisive. And a blatant attempt towards hate.

Thanks Dennis-

I note with interest the two Rev. from All Saints Church in Pasadena.

Rev. George Regas got into trouble with the (Bush politicized) IRS in, I think it was the 2006 election cycle, for saying that his flock should vote for peace in the world.

The church of my youth was two blocks away from this church. It is a very active and progressvie congregation. There are more like them, but they don't get any mention in the media.

Good seed, thanks

Evil is a personality that transcends...Well said!  The Taliban has this evil personality!

We have seen evil in what the Taliban did in Afghanistan, and Iraq, and I wonder why it is that people don't pay attention to the fact that women are freed of that horrible fear and are working outside of the home now, and girls are allowed to go to school again, instead of being confined to their homes!  There is happiness there again!  America helped make this happen.  I'm proud of that!

Remember Saddam Hussein's evil rule and  the beheadings. and the fact that hands, feet, noses were cut off for any offense?  That is evil and terrorism, and we do not ever want to give an inch here in America, do we?  Terrorism must be stopped.  That takes money, strength, fearlessness!  Yes, McCain is our man of the hour, in my humble opinion.  I'm one small voice in the silent majority, that may be sick and tired of being silent!

1.) The Taliban has never been in Iraq. As a matter of fact some high ranking military officials in Afghanistan are suggesting to strike a deal with the Taliban and involve them in the current government to make a government possible at all.

2.) Women may be freed of the fear of dictators and the Taliban, but at the same time they are living in a country that has been bombed to kingdom come. Many have been displaced and to make matters worse they lost the men in their family to provide for them. I would assume that lacking the basic food supplies, drinking water, medical attention etc will not necessarily help to eliminate the fear.

3.) As far as the happiness goes, why don't you ask the people who had to leave their home country to avoid the attacks by the West? Why don't you ask the people who stayed in Iraq and now are faced with unemployment, illness, curfews .... I am a bit doubtful that they will double over backwards in with gratefulness.

As far as Saddam Hussein goes, perhaps you'd like to remember that the USA was a significant contributor to his rise to power. He was hekped into this position to provide a counterweight for the theological run Iran.

No air condition during high heat of summer, no electricity for more than 2-3 hours a day, no food, no school no nothing and if that had happened here would ruby been 'happy' ?  the answer is NO.

Evil is a personality that transcends...Well said!  The Taliban has this evil personality!

As does George Bush, Dicke Cheney, Sarah Palin, and any brand of fundamentalist religion.   As all these trade on fear and seek to motivate people using fear, they are evil.  A religion whose piety is based on abject fear is evil - that includes a large swath of so-called Christians.   So before you start pointing the finger at "them" under stand the fear that's driving you, which is largely a product of the unknown - of ignorance.

A leader, an institution that motivates people using fear is following an easy path.  A path that is an illusion, a path that assumes simplicity where none exists.  As such they are not true leaders, nor institutions that contribute to the betterment of humanity or civilization.

There you go, Xan, making perfect sense again.

I sincerely doubt that I would be "grateful" to any country, no matter what their motivations, if they presumed to come into my country, bomb the sh** out of it, change my life in myriad ways, kill innocent civilians, destroy cherished landmarks, and then expect gratitude for their "intervention". It's absurd to think it would be so.

America always does what is expedient for America, like any other good, self-serving nation. I think I'm learning to be fair, Xanthiana, but the truth still hurts sometimes.

Remember Saddam Hussein's evil rule

In our thirst for oil and power, we betrayed Hussein and the Iraqis over and over again, lying to and manipulating the leaders and citizens of that entire region to our own benefit, and now, some Americans with short memories can't understand why these radical extremists have such a "thing" against us. It may seem unreasonable, if you don't know or understand the history, but I'm sorry to tell you Ruthy J, that if anyone deserves this kind of hatred, we Americans do. What we did to them was nothing short of shameful - period.

How we make it up to them is another story. Yet to be told.

@ 1.1

I just wanted to point out, as many people don't know, that Baptist churches are congregationalist is structure meaning that each congregation is unique and we have no central regulating (for lack of a better word) body.  Saying you left the Baptist church only means that you left your particular church.  I am constantly surprised by the varying degrees of beliefs and stances taken by Baptist churches even within the Southern Baptist Convention, which most people see as unified in belief and stance.

"Begin to get the picture as to why no Baptists signed this statement?"

Er...no. Maybe you could do a DVD and clear that up.

In the first place, none of the twenty people listed who are identified as rabbis, reverends, or pastors represent more than their personal views. They don't speak for all Jews, or all Methodists, etc. If you  find something significant in the missing Baptist,  look for the same thing in the hundred thousand preachers, reverends, and rabbis of all faiths not on the list.

In general, the short list might reflect an overall awareness that new and clever ways of silencing people is not advantageous to society, or to churches,. or to freedom, including the freedom to practice their religion.

But most small churches don't have a "Muslim relations department," or a Department for International Understanding, by the way. They are usually involved in more mundane issues, such as food drives, relationship counseling, the usual religious services, and wacky things like the annual church picnic.  : )

@RuthyJObservations  The Taliban were defeated by Russia, and for the first time in the countries long and bloody history under British Colonial rule, the women had rights and went to school. Ofcourse empowering women is part and parcel of the old Soviet doctrine. Then the Americans came and armed the Taliban and the Heckmartyr brigades some of the most brutal gangs in the world, ousted the Russian and then the US government fully funded and supported the Taliban for over 20 years.

Saddam Hussein was a close American ally and a good friend of Ronald Reagan.

The USA is directly responsible for all this trouble in the middle east for crushing the Iranian democracy under Dr Mozadek crushed by another Republican from Texas Dwight D. I.

Your comment only highlights the complete ignorance of your kind and to claim that Americans are liberators here is a complete lie. So by repeating this you are also a liar. Your comment sounds like it stems from some kind of perverted pseudo Christian orthodoxy, which spouts the same evil empire propaganda nonsense that these groups have been spouting since Jerry Falwell's time.

The Taliban were defeated by Russia

While I agree with most of your post, SthPac, I believe the Taliban emerged after the defeat of Russia by the Afghani Mujahadeen, whom we supported.  After the Russians left we abandoned Afghanistan with a "Job Well Done!"  and went about our business.  We ignored the aftermath of war, didn't support the building of schools or stabilization of the government and all the crazies poured in and took over.

Something similar is happening in the US - with the citizenry not paying attention to education, or outright deriding it, the religious nuts are stepping in to fill the void and impose "christian values" via the public school system.  The only reason they aren't as militant as the Taliban is because they can't afford to be.

@Ire yes it was an historic betrayal, and companies like ERNRON thought they would just waltz in there and set up shop, the T.A.P. project springs to mind, (Trans Afghan Pipeline) Even Osama Bin-Laden was wounded six times fighting against the evil empire, he certainly "Won one for the Gipper" No way to treat "Holy Warriors" who were "Made of the same stuff as our founding fathers"

I saw a very disturbing report on a pentecostal Protestant baptist school  in Washington and training its pupils to be future politicians, they were talking about a "Morals Gap" it reminded me  of the cold war and the Missile gap, except these Christians were more like the Dr Strangelove kind of cold war warriors. I half expected one of them to say they were resuming the Salem witch hunts.

Ugh! I found one of these nasty DVDs in my P.O. box yesterday. It was addressed to me in my full legal name. I felt violated just seeing the effing thing in there with the rest of my mail such as regular parent-teacher conference notices, an USDA conservation district newsletter, my kids' issue of Highlights, area blood mobile donation schedule, and VFD materials.

I haven't even cracked the seal on that DVD hate mail, nor do I intend to. However, I'd be interested to know from other 'Viners who've also gotten this nasty gram, the state in which they legally reside and are presumably registered to vote in the upcoming presidential election.

Agreed magz. There are Christain terrorists, Jewish terrorists etc.  Like all religions Islam has its extremists, but for the most part they are just people trying to get by.

Drives me crazy when someone says well Christainity has never been used to promote killing  people.  These people are igornant and need a history lesson.  They need to look up the Crusades and oh yeah how about for America look up slavery and the massacre of the Native Americans. The Europeans who came over brought all kinds of new diseases over to the Americas, and not knowing about how diseases spread, the Europeans believed the Native Americans were being judged by the Christain God.

The problem is who is doing the killing today. It's not Christians.

Really?  Would the people of Iraq see their invasion and war torn condition as something led by a Christian American?

Heaven knows Bush has reaffirmed his faith, right along with requests for war funding.  What's the human cost to Iraq?  Surely we care deeply for all the innocents maimed and killed, the children orphaned and disfigured. What God do we blame for these deaths?

The Iraq Body Count project states for the week ending December 312006:[9][10] "It was a truly violent year, as around 24,000 civilians lost their lives in Iraq. This was a massive rise in violence: 14,000 had been killed in 2005, 10,500 in 2004 and just under 12,000 in 2003 (7,000 of them killed during the actual war, while only 5,000 killed during the ‘peace’ that followed in May 2003). In December 2006 alone around 2,800 civilians were reported killed. This week there were over 560 civilian deaths reported."

From the above quote here are IBC yearly death totals (not counting the initial 7000 invasion deaths):

Are you insinuating that only violent Muslims died in Iraq? Or Afghanistan for that matter. Hell, Pakistan? Where is this mystical world you describe where only the evil you imagine to be evil die? Unless of course you're saying that they deserve it because a very few of them decided to shoot back? You are painting with a very broad brush jazz, that is not the way to reconciliation and peace.

The so called "Christian terrorist groups" in those  links provided came about in response to violence being perpetrated against Christians by the Muslim and Hindu majority in India and Indonesia.

In Uganda, that organization may call themselves Christians, but they are not. Even the artilce you linked described them as,"self proclaimed Christians".

Still, none of these organizations have perpetrated murder and mayhem on the international  scale which  Islamic terrorists have.

When I have to arrive at the airport 2 hours before my flight, go through extra security and possible body search, its not due to the violence in India by some obscure and nearly defunct Christian group such as ther NLFT.

Get real.

Its a KNOWN fact magz, by those who keep informed of what's going on in the world:

Attacks on members of religious minorities — most notably Muslims and Christians — continued to increase. There were widespread allegations that attacks were carried out directly by, or in connivance with, right-wing Hindu groups. Much of the violence against Christians centred around deprived areas where Christian groups have traditionally carried out development activities with tribal and dalit communities, organizing health and educational services.

Anti Christian Violence in India

You're dancing around so much you can't separate victims from perpetrators. The reason is that you are using religion to prosecute your political views. Any level headed person not avowed to a theocracy would tell you that. It's not the Middle Ages. We  already know about the Crusades, and yeah, the Holocaust too. Demonize those who use religion as an excuse to kill, not the religion.

Reply to Pamela @ #6.9 --
I support your point of view and follow much of what you post, PD.  Just wanted to put a clarification into the record here.

I'm not saying George is being dishonest when he affirms his faith.  However, I would point out that there are stages of development in a life of faith -- no matter what you believe in.

There's is a great piece of research published in "Stages of Faith" by James Fowler.  It's pretty dense reading unless you're into developmental psychology.  It basically documents the stages of human development set forth by each of the classical developmental psychologists, then takes an overview of study subjects from a cross-section of different faiths, including Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, etc.

By doing a comparative study, Dr. Fowler (dec.) sets forth a clear model for the developmental stages of any believer in any faith.  Just as a person can get "psychologically stuck" at any particular stage of development (hence the now antiquated term 'anal retentive'), so a person can get stuck at any stage of development in their chosen faith. I'd say George, IMHO, is about 1.5 out of 5 stages.

Not sure McPain has even started this process yet.  Meaning no disrespect, but he only issues soundbites that are designed to win votes. Can't really tell what's in his heart other than maintaining his power and influence. Obama is probably 4 or 4.5, but I'll review the model again to be sure I'm not being flip here.

My problem with your reasoning comes from my simple mind Jazz.
I have been to many places in the world and several of them Islamic countries. You seem to be lumping all Islamics in to the same mold of violence and barbaric mentality when I have found nothing could be further from the truth.

And actually, as an Obvious American in these countries (levi's, sneakers, polo shirt, and although I speak a few languages, it's always an obvious American accent) I feel safer in most Islamic countries than I do my own.

Now, although the most primitve countries I have been to are in North Africa, I must say modern and developed countries is where I draw my reference from. Tehran, Tunis, Cairo, and Istanbul.
So
I do wish you would seperate extremism from the whole religion. Please?

    Speaking of Darfur----

We have a "Christian" running for the office of VP these days who's Alaska Permanent Fund currently has $22M invested in the government of the Sudan.....

Governor Palin has refused to divest these funds and STOP underwriting the genocide in the Sudan.

I would say this is an issue that makes all of Palin's other issues disappear----being complicit with mass genocide should end the discussion about who Sarah Palin is---good "Christian" that she is....

And can you guess why she refuses to divest these funds? Let her staff member tell you:

"The legislation is well-intended, and the desire to make a difference is noble, but mixing moral and political agendas at the expense of our citizens' financial security is not a good combination," testified Brian Andrews, Palin's deputy revenue commissioner, before a hearing on the Gara-Lynn Sudan divestment bill in February. Minutes from the meeting are posted online by the legislature.

"...mixing moral and political agendas at the expense of our citizens' financial security...."

I guess one thing trumps morality-----profitability......sound familiar??? "American interests......."

I'm glad someone has posted this and started the work of outing these rabble rousers.  The DVD is produced and distributed by http://clarionfund.org/ and they plan to release a second documentary called The Third Jihad, coming soon.

What is most disturbing, Dennis, is that there are almost NO mainstream signatories to this document.  I just spent about 30 minutes looking to see if there is a "less ecumenical", more "right wing Protestant" press release/disclaimer out there.  I couldn't find one.

Where are all the broadcast preachers with huge American and international followings?  People like Chuck Swindoll, Bill Hybels, Rick Warren, Beth Moore, James Dobson, Gordon MacDonald, Brian McLaren, NT Wright, Eugene Peterson, Luci Shaw, Earl Palmer, John MacArthur, Joel Osteen, Bishop Jakes, Tony Evans -- all the people who claim to represent BALANCE in Christian Living?

    From Wikipedia:

Main article: Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West

In September 2008, the group gained attention by distributing, with the aid of the Endowment for Middle East Truth[7], free copies of the film Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West, produced and co-written by Shore, by mail and in newspaper supplements.[8]. The Fund has reportedly sent 28 million DVDs to at least 70 newspapers in swing states to place at the doorstep of newspaper subscribers.[1][2]

Critics have accused the Clarion Fund, through its distribution of the Obsession film, of misleadingly portraying Islam as a threatening religion bent on the destruction of Western civilization, and of interspersing untruthful incendiary commentary with images of Nazis and suicide bombing indoctrination. The film does, though, cite that there are peace-loving and moderate muslims.[9][10][11] Others have called the film 'award winning' and 'required viewing'[12]

In September 2008, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) asked the Federal Election Commission to investigate the Clarion Fund's DVD distribution claiming that it was an attempt to influence the 2008 US presidential election. As evidence of inappropriate political bias on the part of The Clarion Fund, AP cited Patriot News of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania reporting "that a Clarion Fund Web site ran a pro-McCain article before it attracted notice and was taken down."[13]

On October 6th, 2008, the Toledo Blade published an article for peace-loving and moderate Muslims to denounce al-Qaeda. The article explains a brief history on the reluctance of Muslims to criticize their own. The article lends credibility to both the Clarion Fund and the movie "Obsession".[

According to Clarion Fund's incorporation papers, it is based as the same address as Aish Hatorah, an Jewish organization.[3] The three founders of The Clarion Fund are or were full-time employees of Aish HaTorah.[4] Raphael Shore, the leader of The Clarion Fund is also a full-time employee of Aish HaTorah.[5] The Clarion Fund has collaborated with pro-Israel media watch organization HonestReporting in the production of its films. HonestReporting originally was a project of the Aish Hatorah organization.[6

Most of the titles tell the story.

Yes, President, Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace. Co-Founder, Philadelphia Interfaith Walk for Peace and Reconciliation. Co-President, Pax Christi USA: National Catholic Peace Movement.  Director of Muslim Relations, Southern California.  Director, Center on Religion, Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution. President, Institute for Global Engagement.  Executive Director, The Fellowship of Reconciliation... etc.,  are all blessed men and women.

None of those titles I listed were with the names associated with Muslim organizations.

I think the Pope would sign, if he was asked. So would George Bush. He has a golden spatula for flipping pancakes at multi-denoninational prayer breakfasts, and no one has said  "Islam is Peace"  more times than George Bush.

But I expect religious leaders to be blind, and a bit stupid, when it comes to such things.   They kinda don't deal in reality, ya know.  Hug and a prayer....end of terrorism. Halleluia!

Don't give in to calls for censorship, no matter how pretty the slogans sound, and no matter how many reverends sign up.  The "obsession" here, is still for censorship.

Freedom of speech...enough said. People do not have to acquire a copy of obsession and watch it, thats completely asinine. If you do not want to watch it, then don't watch it! Unfortunately, there are plenty of peace loving Muslims in the world just like there were peace loving Germans, Japanese, and Russians. Again, the radical minority seizes control over the majority (Islamic fundamentalists have seized control of the moderates, thats a fact) and leads them to their bidding. It is our responsibility to spread knowledge and stop giving Islam's expansionist agenda the benefit of the doubt (they really do want to destroy the west because were Christian, no other reason). So when Muslims decapitate captured international contractors overseas on the internet, where is the response from Chrisitan leaders then??? it just proves that our liberal western society is so self-destructing. There's hope yet though...

And again the radical christians have seized upon another opportunity to spread fear, hate and define the debate - that's a fact.

Ire, where the debate is about free speech, it took place over two hundred years ago.

You know, to paraphrase, I may not agree with you, but I defend your right to say it.

I would also conclude that where so many people have somehow remained unaware of the obvious dangers of Islamic fundamentalists,  even if you consider free speech an impediment to your sense of well-being,  there seems to be a need for education about radical Islam.

Oddly, some of the same material is shown to inspire Muslim children to follow the examples shown, in  places like Pakistan and Gaza, without a cair. Here, it is presented to adults to make people aware, and some want that disallowed.

I think there's a difference between individuals presenting views to others to inform and organizations (especially those set up as charities) funded by questionable sources to either incite hate or cause fear. Especially where such presentation arrives with a Sunday paper to select households in key states during this stage of an election campaign. Had this DVD been peddled a year ago, it is debatable if it would have even been newsworthy.

Any election campaign is good enough reason for people to seriously raise questions on motive. When that is arguably the most critical election campiagn in US history (where the results will have an impact on the entire free world that we all so passionately wish to protect and preserve) and it is absolutely right that the masses should be raising their arms in protest.

Does the Judge not agree with democracy working in that way?

so many people have somehow remained unaware of the obvious dangers of Islamic fundamentalists,

The danger, as I see it, is fundamentalism in general: Islamic,Christian, Hindu, Communist, Capitalist, Socialist, etc.

Someone like Palin, for instance, represents the sort of fundamentalism you reference, she just isn't pushing "brand Islam".

I have yet to live through an election not described as critical. That would be quite a few.

I am disinterested in the method of distribution, and where it was distributed. If a person or group feels that the information is important, and where free speech most definitely and most strongly applies to political speech, and conversely, where speech is at greatest risk, in a political season, all the more reason to ensure that nothing prohibits or inhibits free speech.

That right is not something that is dependent on the "masses" agreeing or disagreeing with the speech.

The information is not new, and the problem didn't start when Obama decided to run. One should be careful about agreeing to censorship for a percieved immediate gain. Granted, I believe it will not impact either candidate. However, I am sure more people have watched  at least some of it thanks to this obsessive outcry, for which I am also sure the producers are grateful.

Gosh, Ire, you really think Palin advocates the tactics of radical Islam?

Then I think you think you shouldn't vote for her.

It is good when those who long for truth and peace stand up against evil.

Great seed.  It brings with it another vantage point from which to view the hatred and lies and divisevness being vented this election year.  Further, it makes us look at ourselves and our peers lest we become too contentious.

Q: The newspaper distribution would have records of the 'authors' of this garbage, no?
