Firefox 3 RC1 Released

advertisement

Firefox 3 is based on the Gecko 1.9 Web rendering platform, which has been under development for the past 33 months. Building on the previous release, Gecko 1.9 has more than 14,000 updates including some major re-architecting to provide improved performance, stability, rendering correctness, and code simplification and sustainability. Firefox 3 has been built on top of this new platform resulting in a more secure, easier to use, more personal product with a lot more under the hood to offer website and Firefox add-on developers.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The final version of Firefox 3 will be released when we qualify the product as fully ready for our users. Users of the latest released version of Firefox should not expect all of their add-ons to work properly with this preview release.

I've been using the beta for a couple of weeks now, and I like it a lot.

I used Betas 2 through 5, and installed RC1 about an hour ago. Seems to be just fine. No problems at all, and most of my plugins work, though not all of them.

Sadly, my Bush countdown add-on doesn't work with 3. A couple of my other extensions worked with the beta, but they don't work with the RC.

It's Flash. The Flash plugin doesn't work yet.

A ha! Let's hope that's working soon. I miss my extensions.

Hardly any of my themes or extensions work. All of the plug-ins work ok though.
It won't be long before the enthusiasts deploy their updates. There are a lot of good things in FF3, it's a true upgrade.

I've just gone back to 2.0.0.14 purely on the basis that the firevine extension doesn't work.
How about it then Adam.....any chance of an update?

    Please.....

I'm used to not using Firevine because I tested the beta for so long, but yeah, I do miss it. But now that the release candidate is out, Adam has no excuse....

My version of Firefox (v 2.0.0.14) is a memory hog. Does the new version use less memory?

Yeah, that's one of the biggest improvements.

2.0.0.14 did not play with Newsvine well on my iMac. I hope this will be an improvement.

I love Firefox. I've been using 3.5 and have no problems.

I upgraded from 3.5b to 3rc1 today, and it seems about the same, really. Haven't noticed any real difference, at least not yet.

Ubuntu doesn't have a package yet, but hopefully that GTK theme fix will have fixed my stupid errors with the default theme and KDE.

Woo! Still 2x heavier on my system and .5x as fast as opera.

But Opera doesn't have the extensions. Otherwise, I'd be using it (or Konqi).
