It's that time again!
The February earnings have been posted, and from the look of it, ad revenue was down for the month.
February was actually my third highest month ever, about 33% up from January but down 40% from my stellar December. Still not enough to buy me dinner [and way under what others are probably making], but better than I thought it would be given the content I seeded/wrote in Feb.
I earned 53 pennies. The costs to benefits (money, exposure, social value) on Newvine just doesn't pan out for me. I'm moving on to greener pastures.
can i get a copy of that map to greener pastures?... i'm all packed up.
Yeah, me too. If you find somewhere good, Neron, let us know
The map hasn't been drawn yet, but I am definately leaving Newsvine. I've wasted enough time.
I hope to find a suitable blog site that will host my agenda, which is ultimately a peaceful planet, beginning with the Middle East. The material I produce is original and valuable. No other person is able to do what I am doing because it cannot be learned by ordinary methods; it comes out of my soul and my relationship with God.
I need assistance, financially and otherwise, to continue this work.
If anyone has any ideas feel welcome to contact me. Once I am in a position to devote myself entirely to this effort, the new material ought to flow rather freely.
dude are you serious? somebody watch that guy. no seriously watch him.
I'm down from my January high by 11 cents. How depressing.
hey. thanks for the prompt. didn't know quite how this worked. now I do. just checked.
All of 47 cents for first 2 weeks of Vining! Wow!! beers all round?
I'm down about half from January...wierd.
I've actually been way down for the last couple months -- but my January / February output was fairly low.
Really low, too. Guess I didn't participate as much as I thought I had.
This $9.25 has been my lowest since September which was $6.93 though in between there I have had some fairly good months.
This was my lowest month yet, which is rather surprising. I thought I had participated more. Oh well.
$4.18. Is that good? That's my first month of money. It'll buy me a blt.
That's awesome sbutki, mine is $10.95 and so whatever you did it's catching up pretty fast, good for you!!
Thanks. I'm going to try not to spend it all at one liquor store place.
$4.41.
Wow, a whopping $1.45! Down 25% from January, with exactly the same amount of content provided. Hmmm.
Good thing I do this for the love of the community, and not because I'm trying to make a living. ;)
i had no idea i had any earnings! thanks for the heads up paperdragon.
lol $1.63 after 3 months...hmmm. maybe i'll buy a pet hamster?
Glad I'm not here for the money.
I don't even have enough to buy a 6 pack.

I don't even have enough to buy a 6 pack.
what, condoms?
Guess I'll just have to drink my beer bareback.

Anybody here for the money, probably won't be here for long. With that said, I will humbly accept any that comes my way. It's money for what I do anyway, reading news.
what I do anyway, reading news
wow, newsguru. I'd never have guessed:-)
says he, with a facetious smile
As a side business, I think I should start collecting all the "earned pennies" that seems to be causing viners so much distress.
keep a lookout for a strange new charity appearing in the donations list. make sure it's not some media guy looking to make a fast buck.
:) good one RKR
I could have sworn I participated a bit more in February. ::shrugs::
Oh well, I should have a nice return for March. Otherwise, I give up.
I was totally stoked to see my first thirty-three cents. Who knew I could earn money while wasting my time at work.
Who knew I could earn money while wasting my time at work.
That is priceless.
Who knew I could earn money while wasting my time at work.
You mean we shouldn't be doing this at work? Whatever am I supposed to do between 9 and 5?
Who knew I could earn money while wasting my time at work.
Ditto. If I didn't have Newsvine I'm not sure what I would spend my "working" hours doing.

Spuds, this is your supervisor. See me immediately about this post. You KNOW you're not supposed to be looking at this stuff during work.
You are sooo busted.
(kidding!)

LOL...Scott I know you are not my supervisor. How I know is that my manager is technically illiterate. I'm not sure he knows how to turn a PC on.
Good thing I didn't try to order you to pay a monetary fine.
:)
Well, I was down from January, too.
I assume everybody else has the momentary urge to game the system after looking at their earnings, right?
You are not alone.
I just thought of six different Newsvine-related articles bashing George Bush and calling for gun control that I could write.
But I got over it.
;)
I'm so glad you got over it Viki. I only have 2 things to say:
1) Obviously none of us are doing this for the money.
2) I haven't even looked at mine and there's no way I'm going to.
2) I haven't even looked at mine and there's no way I'm going to.
Come on. It's just a click away. Aren't you even curious? Maybe some error gave you ten million dollars?
And if you don't look and see the error you won't be able to give Mike and gang their money back. No?
I will say, Surya, that when I see that my meager earnings have gone down, it does inspire me to work a little harder at providing some meaningful content. And when they're up, it inspires me to provide even MORE meaningful content.
I said it inspires me to do so. I didn't say I actually do it ;)
Some people ARE here for the money (see some of the above comments), and that's just foolish, as far as I'm concerned.
I didn't even know - heck I still don't exactly - how the earnings work. Is it real cash? Has anyone actually held the money? Are you sure this isn't some big money laundering scheme by Cash? It sure would explain that name than that lame explanation about some guy named Johnny.
Is it real cash?
Yes it is. Yes I have had a couple of "real" payments so far from my time at Newsvine.
Yep, looks like we're on a slow decline. I wonder why October, November and December were so big and since then we've seen it slipping.
Not that it bothers me too much; I'll use my modest earnings to grab a game to review or something once it compiles to a point that I can. But I'm curious if there's any particular reason for this trend.
I broke even... I "added my 2 cents" to a couple topics... that's exactly how much I made back... bling bling
Dennis,
And with the continuing collapse of the american dollar, those Newsvine earnings don't go as far as they used to.
When is EURONewsvine opening?
up a penny over the last month.
recheck your chart
chill
recheck your chart
ok
I checked.
it's still a penny higher
Could it be the number of Viners has grown so everyone gets a smaller piece of the pie?
My first month and all I did was comment. Well I got my two cents worth. Truthfully, having access to such a wide variety of opinions is worth much more. Thanks people.
I made $2.73
Most yet. I am excitedly awaiting March payday. By April payday I should be able to cash out for the first time.
I earned twice as much as I got in January, which makes $0.28 in total.
I've still got high hopes for March -- my most active/popular month thus far. But yeah, my earnings are down too for February.
I must be a strange bird. Feb was my best month yet, by a decent margin:
My prior best was last Oct with 4.74
Feb I pulled in a whopping 5.59
This maybe outta bounds but I think it would encourage and inspire all even more (or discourage us) if Newsvine posted the top 10 earnings paid each month. Sure, it'd be nice to know who, but honestly that's not even necessary. We all rightly assume to the top folks make the top money anyway. But to know what's possible in my own opinion would give me at least a goal... or at least confirm that I'm a loser. :)
Ex:
Am I really being so naive when I think that Viners don't come here to earn? Surely not.
I'm sure that some people come in with a grand vision of making good money. That fades after a month or two.
At that point: You're either here for the community or you give up.
When I joined, I didn't even know about the earnings part. What Brian says above is absolutely true.
Right on. I came because I ...
I just remember I covered it all in my piece when I came. Editors should avoid repetition...

exactly
I was hoping after they announced the August earnings they would do something similar each month. I completely agree that they should show the top 10 earners each month (with or without names) and maybe even the top 10 of all time.
Thanks for the support of that idea Sean. I hope they hurry. This thread is getting more depressing by the minute.
just a thought... or maybe they shouldn't post them... if we all found out that the top people were making some ridiculous amounts it would throw the depressed into a worse depression ... seeing the huge gap and make them think this is some sort of racquet.
I don't think they'll ever post the names of the top earners, that's for sure. It's a bit of an invasion of privacy, don't you think?
Wouldn't it roughly be the same as the leaderboard for the week and the last three weeks?
Isn't the cat out of the bag as far as privacy details?
No -- because the leaderboard isn't solely based on page views.
Watchlist adds factor in heavily -- votes, popular comments made by the user in question, etc.
Earnings are (so far as I'm aware) determined solely by page views. The top earners earn the most because they are linked from popular websites with tons of traffic.
Most of that traffic probably does little more than read and move on.
So why not add a category on the leaderboard for pageviews? And we could make our own guesstimates... guess I answered my own question.
So, Brian, how do they get "linked from the popular websites with tons of traffic"?
(sorry I'm a laymen...in some things)
I didn't say I was one of the top earners.
:)
The only promotional efforts I do for my own writing: I use my column URL whenever I post a comment on an off-site thread which asks for a website. That way, if people click my name after reading my comment, they're linked to my column. I also recently started cross-posting my articles to my Virb profile (you can cross-post automatically with an RSS feed).
I doubt very much that either of those bring me many page views.
I was linked from the BBC one time (don't ask me how) and made John Gruber's linked list on Daring Fireball once -- after posting an interview I conducted with John Gruber.
Otherwise, my writing is picked up (I assume) because I've been doing it for over a year, now. Consistency is probably a big part of it.
Still, I imagine I'm out page-viewed by many, many other Viners and that is probably because I'm out-written and out-classed by many, many other Viners. (And in some cases, they promote their stuff more than I do.)
:)
Maybe we will have another big month like we did in December. Im trying to pay for gas to the Newsvine Convention
